Queensland Floods

What did you see when you looked outside your bedroom window this morning? Most Queenslanders didn’t get a good night sleep or any sleep at all as they are located in an area that has been declared a ‘disaster zone’; as most of Queensland (QLD) is covered in water.

It would be safe of me to assume that you have seen the stories whether you’ve watched the extended news reports, heard about the Queensland floods on the radio or read the stories in the newspapers. You will all know that Queensland is under metres of water which is showing no signs of moving, anytime soon. The floods have impacted 75% of Queensland which is the combined size of Germany and France.

Heavy Rain and Flash Flooding Predicted for Victoria

Victoria is preparing for heavy rainfall and potential flash flooding with average rainfalls of 80-150mm predicted to fall for the week ending 15th of January.

Flood Watches have been issued for most of the state, with thunderstorm activity also a possibility in the Central, Western and North Western parts of the state.

After easing on Thursday the 13th of January, Friday the 14th of January will see a return of heavy rains with strong winds and the potential for further flash flooding.

Celebrities Support Homeless Women

Every night there are more than 46,000 women who are homeless in Australia, many of these women are faced with daily abuse, neglect and many have their children, with them. Celebrities Lisa Wilkinson, Chrissie Swan, Jo Stanley, Tracee Hutchison, Liz Ellis and international star Cameron Diaz are all supporting Women’s Subscription Enterprise which provides training and pathway opportunities for Australia’s growing number of homeless women. High profile celebrity, Cameron Diaz, features on the cover of the launch edition of The Big Issue proving that it’s all about women. Natalie Susman, Head of the Women’s Subscription Enterprise for The Big Issue explains that “our research found that homeless women are often fleeing domestic violence situations and present with a far more complex range of needs than men; including safety and security or somewhere to leave their children while they work,” Ms Susman said. “Standing on a street corner selling a magazine is not a suitable option for many of them.”

Should we advertise on the Sydney Harbour Bridge?

Earlier this year I went to Sydney with a few friends for a much-needed holiday. It was fun and exciting. We got to do all the touristy things, like visit the Opera House, see the Sydney Harbour Bridge and visit the many fancy restaurants and shopping strips.

When we checked into our hotel the lady at the desk was very excited to tell us, “Make sure you go to see the Opera House tonight – it’s going to be pink!” Well, I was just as excited as she was. I had seen the Opera House on our way to the hotel, but it was just plain old white. Pink on the other hand, well, that would be different.

Who is a ‘real’ woman?

Recently Jennifer Hawkins, model and Miss Universe 2004, posed nude and un-airbrushed for the cover and a photo spread in Australian Marie Claire. This cover was meant to produce a positive body-image for all Australian women; however, it has done the opposite with many claiming that Hawkins doesn’t represent a ‘real’ woman.

Jackie Frank, editor of Australian Marie Claire, explained that a survey of 5,500 readers showed that only 12% of women were truly happy with their body. The idea of putting a naked and un-changed Jen Hawkins on the cover was to create a positive statement about body image.

TechSmart Families

An Optus Family Communication Survey has revealed that over half (53%) of Australian parents rate their family as being like ‘The Jetsons’ – with all family members being extremely techsmart. The majority of families say they choose to communicate via email, SMS and using their mobile phones and the Internet.

20% of those surveyed saw their family fitting more into ‘The Simpsons’ category with the parents being slightly techno-phobic and the children being extremely well-advanced in regards to modern technology.

Stop Glassing, Ban Glasses.

The dangerous and aggressive act of glassing is becoming an increasingly common at pubs, bars and nightclubs around Australia. Glassing does not just happen in the central city of the state but in country areas too. Victims of glassing attacks can cause concussion, heavy blood loss, scarring and cause the victom to have serious injuries for life; to the extent that one victim is now blind. Plastic cups have already been introduced in some Sydney venues, the rest of Australia needs to follow suite. Glassing is a physical attack where glass is used as the weapon.

Travelling to Thailand

Should Obese Aussies have to Purchase two Airline tickets?

A recent study by travel.com.au, an online travel company, has revealed that 53% of Australians think that obese or largely overweight people should have to purchase two economy class seat tickets when travelling by plane. Australia is currently ranked as the number one fattest nation in the world, with 26% of Australian adults now obese, weighing out American, who has a obesity rate of 25%. It revealed that 65% of 18-24 year olds believed overweight people should have to purchase two economy class seat tickets when travelling by plane, 76% of Western Australia resident's agreed.

Thailand

It has been three and half years since the horrid and debilitating Tsunami hit the tropical coastal shores of southwest Thailand. Slowly but surely Thailand as a nation have come together and rebuilt their tourism industry, one of the main sources of income for many Thai’s. The small, exotic islands that surround Thailand, such as Koh Phi Phi, Krabi (pronounced Grabi) and Railay beach are amongst some of the most tranquil and picturesque destinations that Southeast Asia has to offer.
