Review:

Chinese Homestyle Cooking by Maggie Zhu is a comprehensive guide to traditional Chinese cuisine. The book is beautifully photographed and includes easy-to-follow recipes that are perfect for both novice and experienced cooks.

Along with easy to follow recipes, there is also helpful tips and variations for each recipe, making it easy to customize the dish to your own tastes.

The author emphasis on using fresh, whole ingredients, but many of the recipes call for traditional Chinese ingredients such as Sichuan peppercorns, fermented black beans, and five-spice powder, which can be difficult to find in Western supermarkets. However, there are helpful tips for substituting ingredients or finding them online.

One of my favorite recipes from the book is the "Sichuan-Style Spicy and numbing chicken" which is a classic Sichuan dish. Included is a detailed guide on how to make the Sichuan chili oil, which is a key ingredient in the dish, and how to use it in other dishes.

Chinese Homestyle Cooking is an excellent guide to traditional Chinese cuisine in all it's glory.
