Music for Dreaming has been acclaimed by parents and also a range of health and childcare professionals including the Royal Children's Hospital (Victoria), the Mercy Hospital for Women (Victoria), the John Hunter Children's Hospital (New South Wales) and Neonatal Intensive Care units worldwide.
BIOGRAPHY - CHERIE ROSS
Melbourne's Cherie Ross, Director of Sound Impressions has created a unique collection of therapeutic CDs based on scientific and medical research.
Cherie developed an interest in music and its effects on children when she came across scientific data about the importance of music to infants in Intensive Care during her studies in psychology as part of her Commerce degree. At the same time Cherie also discovered international research examining the delicate relationship between mother and baby, both pre and post birth.
This prompted Cherie to consult with medical and child-care specialists, explore both international and local studies and also conduct her own independent research. Cherie explored musical, medical and physiological responses to how our auditory system receives sound during both sleep and wake time.
As part of her meticulous research, Cherie recorded women's womb sounds at different stages of pregnancy. These frequencies were then analysed by the head of music therapy at the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne, in order to determine the most appropriate instruments capable of reproducing the maternal sounds that an infant experiences in utero.
Analysis showed that the most appropriate and safe stimulus was pure, traditional, acoustic sound. These findings were incorporated into one continuous hour of well known lullabies and played by a team of hand selected, leading musicians from the prestigious Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. The groundbreaking Music for Dreaming CD was launched in 1995.
"There are lullaby albums available for parents, but most of the music is synthetic sound produced by electronic means and is inappropriate for babies. Alternatively, the rich, pure harmonic quality that is created by traditional instruments resonates gently within our body, creating restfulness which simply cannot be achieved with synthetic sound," Cherie said.
"We don't feed synthetic food to grow the body, so it follows that we should not we feed synthetic music to develop the auditory system," she said.
The original Music for Dreaming CD has been used in hospitals and homes with newborn babies throughout the world. This unique CD was the first of its kind and has been acclaimed as an invaluable method for calming and settling distressed babies.
Due to overwhelming demand, Cherie has again incorporated the same principles to create Music for Dreaming II and now Christmas Music for Dreaming.
Cherie said "I feel privileged that my music can help make it possible for all the family to enjoy a feeling of connectedness and peace and the precious gift of a silent night at Christmas time."
