Dodge Connolly (Clooney) is a greying American Football player who is determined to bring his team out of the bars and clubs and into packed stadiums.

Facing the impending collapse of the National Football League and the recent loss of his team’s main sponsor, Dodge recruits a young college football star Carter Rutherford (Kranski), to the ranks in an effort to draw spectators to the game.

Rutherford’s on-field speed and accuracy is legendary and teamed with his heroic efforts in WWI where he single-handedly convinced multiple German soldiers to surrender, he is fast becoming America’s prodigal son.

Lexie Littleton (Zellweger) is a spitfire cub reporter who, having landed in the big leagues, is out to prove her worth. Having found holes in Carter’s war story, she begins an investigation that threatens to upturn both Connolly and Rutherford’s lives. As the well-oiled PR plan begins to unravel, Rutherford and Connolly begin an off-field battle to win the affections of Lexie’s heart. As he juggles keeping the team together with his growing affections for Lexie, Connolly is certain of one thing... always keep one final play from the defence.
