Fashion that Doesn't Fit


Australians are emotionally affected by the lack of sizing consistency, with one in two revealing they feel frustrated, fat or depressed when they don't fit into their usual size in clothes.

According to a survey of 1865 people by LookSmart Alterations, Australia and New Zealand's most trusted tailor, consumers are so annoyed with inconsistent sizing that one in three would avoid a particular brand completely if it was a smaller make than usual and 46% claim they would prefer to shop at a more expensive store in order to fit their desired size.

Despite 64% of people having mixed sizes in their wardrobe, very few know why. Only 14.4% of Australians are aware of how clothing in Australia is measured and manufactured, that is, based on no set sizing standard. If the current sizing standard is used - it's incorrect.

Abraham Hatoum, Managing Director, LookSmart Alterations said:"People are paying more attention to the size tag than the price tag and feeling down when they can't fit their standard size. Australians need to be aware that there is no standard, so having a wardrobe consisting of all the same size is unrealistic. People should aim for the perfect fit, not the perfect size, and work with any outfit to ensure it enhances their individual body shape."

Jo Kellock, Executive Director, Council of Textile & Fashion Industries of Australia (TFIA), said:"Consumers are confused about sizes and it's impacting their experience with fashion retail. People come in many different shapes and sizes, so one size will never fit all. However having an accurate sizing standard based on scientific data will allow all designers to have consistent sizes and ensure the consumer feels good about their experience with fashion."
