Georgia Fields

Georgia Fields is tickled pink to announce the release of the first single from her forthcoming album.

Whether playing solo or with her mini-indie-orchestra, Georgia woos audiences with her distinctive blend of timeless pop, vintage folk, and unconventional instrumentation.

Her new single, One Finger, tells the cheeky tale of a fight for the upper hand in a passive-aggressive friendship. It's a sauntering strum-along, with Georgia's storytelling vocal inciting the listener to both bop and sway. The shuffling rhythm section is enriched with the delicate timbres of ukulele, clarinet, and a soaring string section. Tying in with the 'house of cards' artwork, each limited-edition One Finger single will come with a unique collectable vintage playing card.

Bonus material on the disc includes the resplendent Moon To Dust. This elaborate composition was remarkably recorded in one solitary 10-hour studio session. It's wooden and broken-music-box semblance, with glockenspiels chiming and cellos mourning, reveals sublimely subtle sadness.

The second b-side on the single is a particularly inspired version of the Gunners classic Sweet Child O'Mine. Recorded at The Toff In Town, its childlike charm instantly embeds itself in the soft spot of your heart. Three part harmonies, glockenspiel Slash riff and a recorder choir finale fortifies this cover as instant smile breaker.

Collaborators on Georgia's forthcoming album include cellist and multi-instrumental extraordinaire, Judith Hamann (cello, harp, vocals, piano, power drill and more). Engineer whizkid Myles Mumford is also on board, (Lamplight; Martin Martini), with ARIA- and APRA-awarded Greg Arnold of iconic Australian band Things of Stone and Wood in the producer's seat (Carus; Skipping Girl Vinegar).

One Finger is released Saturday 15th August on Popboomerang Records and distributed through MGM.

"Georgia Fields is a phenomenally accomplished young artist... While many of her contemporaries share a similarity of delivery, Georgia is unique and timeless…" - Billy Baxter (ABC Radio).

Interview with Georgia Fields

How did it feel to hear your song played all over the airwaves?

Georgia Fields: It's a strange cocktail of emotions - awkward shyness, mixed with excitement and relief (someone out there must like what I do!).

Did you have any pre-conceived ideas about the music industry?

Georgia Fields: When I started I thought (to borrow an old saying) that there was "only one way to skin a cat." I believed that an artist needed to get signed to a major label in order to release and promote their records. Well, I began working as an independent musician, and as it turned out I really enjoyed being a self-managed artist. I am now signed to indie label Popboomerang Records, still self-managing my work but collaborating a lot with the Label Manager. It's been a really interesting journey and a steep learning curve.

Do you write your own songs? What's your inspiration?

Georgia Fields: I write all my own material. I find inspiration mostly from personal experiences, or external stories that I can filter through my own private reflections or emotional responses.

What music/artists do you listen to when you are not playing your own?

Georgia Fields: Dr Dre, Tom Waits, The Beatles, Tori Amos, Ray Charles, Queens Of The Stone Age, The Beach Boys, Angie Hart, Patsy Cline. It really depends on my mood.

What's next? Tour/Album/Single?

Georgia Fields: I am working on an album, due in Winter 2010. I'm also going to do my first tour next year!

Was there a moment you contemplated throwing in the towel?

Georgia Fields: I contemplate throwing in the towel often. And then I write a song about it, and realise how much music is a part of how I express myself. And then I recognise that it's not something I can quit. And after that I remember how much I love it.

Do you prefer performing live or recording?

Georgia Fields: They are both such different performance platforms that it's almost impossible to compare them. I enjoy interacting with my band and the audience in a live format; I enjoy the imagination and melodic architecture that goes into a recorded performance.

What/who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?

Georgia Fields: My parents are musicians, so I was always pretty sure that I wanted to spend my life singing and playing piano or guitar. There was a brief time where I wanted to be a marine biologist, but music won.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced along the way to your musical success?

Georgia Fields: Time management and perseverance. Developing the patience to endure the process has been my biggest challenge.

What's a typical day like?

Georgia Fields: I am a full-time nanny and a full-time University student, as well as a musician. I wake up at about 6:30am to go to nannying. If I have emails or band-related work to do that day, I get up at 5:30am and do them then (because I won't have internet access until after business hours are over).

My schedule varies a bit, but it's usually a morning of nannying and an afternoon of classes. After Uni I am either taking care of general home stuff like cooking and cleaning, or picking up more kids from school if I have a second nannying client. In the evenings I catch up on band work, or I rehearse or record or write. I fit homework in somehow too. Sometimes I get to do something fun like have a social life, but mostly it's work! Not very glamorous, I know.

What has been your favorite part of becoming a music artist?

Georgia Fields: Collaborating with the inspired and talented musicians in my band, past and present.

If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

Georgia Fields: Either Tom Waits or Paul McCartney.

Are you single? What do you look for in a partner?

Georgia Fields: I look for someone who is genuine and intelligent. My partner is a visual artist and a video game designer - we have a lot in common but also some completely different interests. It keeps our relationship engaging and stops us from being too competitive with each other.

Do you have a website fans can visit?

Georgia Fields: www. myspace.com/georgiafields

Can you tell us 5 things required for a happy healthy & enjoyable life?

Georgia Fields: I am still trying to find that recipe! At the moment I am trying for: enough sleep; nourishing food and coffee; spending time with my partner; Rubber Soul on vinyl; daily doses of 'keyboard cat'.

What message would you like to say to your fans?

Georgia Fields: Thanks for liking what I do!
