Rooked Interview

Samantha from Rooked is a singer/songwriter/instrumentalist from South Florida.

Question: Did you have any pre-conceived ideas about the music industry?

Samantha: I feel it is important to begin your journey through the industry with the aspect of understanding and mastering the virtues of patience and self-control. The idea of people "losing themselves" or "going astray" from the overwhelming nature of the industry is very true. If you have a healthy mindset the likelihood of changing who you are is slim given you have control over your feelings and emotions.


Question: Do you write your own songs? What's your inspiration?

Samantha: Yes. My life and the lives of those who surround me are my inspiration.


Question: What music/artists do you listen to when you are not playing your own?

Samantha: I listen to artists of all genres, all eras... I love music and I am not biased towards any particular genre or era. If you are a boyband, a rapper who does not write his or her own songs, or a "pop singer", I still consider you artists and entertainers. To me what makes an artist or what makes something ART is the ability to evoke beautiful emotions. I know the rapper SNOW has hardly any credibility to his name, however I will admit I had a blast dancing to that song "Informer" during my childhood and attempting to figure out the words.

To me an artist is not just someone who inspires me, but someone who can evoke an emotion whether it be a laugh, a cry, a smile.... That is what is important. There are some artists I will turn off when I hear some of their songs if they do not appeal to me, but regardless there is someone or many people out their who love "that song" or "that artist"; They are no less of an artist if they do not appeal to my tastes.


Question: What's next? Tour/Album/Single?

Samantha: There is an album in the works.


Question: Was there a moment you contemplated throwing in the towel?

Samantha: No.


Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?

Samantha: I prefer performing.


Question: What/who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?

Samantha: The Temptations, Oscar Brown Jr., Mariah Carey, Simon & Garfunkel, Anita Baker, Prince, Diane Schurr, The Who... Countless other artists.


Question: What is the biggest challenge you have faced along the way to your musical success?

Samantha: Time makes everything seem more challenging...


Question: What's a typical day like?

Samantha: Live and live actively and strong.


Question: What has been your favourite part of becoming a music artist?

Samantha: Meeting new people.


Question: If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

Samantha: Owen Pallett and Lisa Gerrard.
