Jason Stojanovski Colossal Interview

Jason Stojanovski is one of the big, rising stars in theater. Currently the lead in Colossal, playing at San Francisco Playhouse, Stojanovski's performance is winning raves from major press across the nation.

What makes Jason's success all the more pleasing, inspiring and applaudable is that he has cerebral palsy.

"I can gladly say that industry professionals have always seen my "disability" as an advantage," remarks Stojanovski in a recent interview, "Actors are always looking for ways to separate themselves from the pack. I don't need to try, I just have to walk into the room".

The producers of Colossal offered Jason the role without audition.

On the big screen, Jason has been seen in acclaimed indie fare like Suburban Mayhem, Subterano and The Killing Game.

Interview with Jason Stojanovski

Question: How would you describe Colossal?

Jason Stojanovski : Colossal is such a complex story that touches on so many important issues, but I think it's best described as being a study of sacrifices, why we make them, what we feel we are owed for risking it all and the lengths we will go to obtain what we believe is rightfully ours.

Question: How did it feel to receive the lead role, without auditioning?

Jason Stojanovski : Great! It's always an incredible feeling knowing that my peers have seen my work and that it was able to move them enough to believe that I could lead their show.

Question: What have you found most difficult about Colossal?

Jason Stojanovski : It's a hugely demanding show, both physically and emotionally. That's not a bad thing by any means, the most satisfying roles for any actor usually are! But it definitely can be difficult at times.

Question: And, what have you enjoyed most?

Jason Stojanovski : The comradery. This has been one of the most amazing groups of people I've had the chance to work with. As I mentioned, Colossal is a demanding show. With so many different pieces that needed to fit together for this show to come to life and a relatively short rehearsal period, we really came together as an ensemble and built an amazing work environment very quickly. It was incredible to be a part of a group like this.

Question: Do you have a preference between live or recorded performance?

Jason Stojanovski : I prefer recorded performances only because a camera is more likely to capture the little character subtleties that can sometimes get lost in the grand nature of the stage. But with that said, I think the stage is a place that every actor needs to revisit from time to time. It gives you the opportunity to sharpen a particular set of skills you'd be hard pressed to find anywhere else.

Question: What are you missing most about Australia?

Jason Stojanovski : My friends and family. It's always tough being away from the people you love!
OH!... and Maltesers.

Question: What originally inspired your passion for acting?

Jason Stojanovski : My mum actually forced me into an acting class when I was 12. I never had considered it before that. But what turned this into a passion for me was seeing the effect that it had on other people. Telling stories can have a powerful impact on people's lives. I guess I felt like I needed to be a part of that.

Question: Was it difficult for you to break into the industry?

Jason Stojanovski : It's a tough industry for anyone to break. But having Cerebral Palsy definitely added a whole other set of challenges. As with anything though, confidence, belief and perseverance got me through the tough times.

Question: If you could work with anyone in the industry; who would you choose to work with?

Jason Stojanovski : That's always a really difficult question to answer because there are so many amazing actors that I respect and admire but if I had to pick one I'd say Robert DeNiro. I watched so many of his films growing up, they always left a lasting impression with me.

Question: What's next, for you?

Jason Stojanovski : I have a few projects in the works at the moment but it's a little early to give any specifics. But keep an eye out for me!
