Myles Anceschi SodaStream Top Tips To Cool Down Consciously Interview

We're in the middle of summer, temperatures are soaring and we're all looking for ways to cool down.

It's tempting to switch on the air conditioner but weighing up the costs to both our bills and the environment, many of us are looking for easy ways to keep cool without the environmental impact.

Top Tips to Cool Down Consciously:

Use a fan first: Fans are a more economical and environmentally conscious way to cool a room down. They only cost approximately 1c/hour to run, and use less electricity than air conditioners, which reduces CO2 emissions. Evaporative coolers don't use as much energy as refrigerated air conditioning, but can use as much as 60L of water an hour for ducted systems.

Just cool the room you're in – and turn cooling off when you leave: You'll save money, energy and give the cooler a chance to work properly instead of trying to cool a bigger area than it's capable of. Shutting doors helps trap cool air looking to escape.

Cool yourself from the inside out: Staying hydrated is incredibly important in hot weather, especially for children and the elderly. Keep cool water in the fridge and mix it up with soda water and slices of fruit such as lemon and berries. A home beverage maker like SodaStream is a clever way to be mindful of waste from single use plastic as you can refill and refrigerate bottles of tap water as needed.

Skip your lunchtime jog: Try and exercise in the cooler parts of the day such as early morning, or later in the afternoon when the sun is lower in the sky. Remember to hydrate before and after exercise.

Think green long term: Trees provide vital shade and can reduce your cooling costs by blocking the sun before it hits your home. Put up exterior shade sails or grow deciduous vines over a pergola, particularly on the Western facing sides of your home where the sun hits.

Tim Silverwood, co-founder of -Take 3 – A Clean Beach Initiative' and specialist in environmental sustainability believes being more conscious about how we cool down can have huge environmental benefits.

'When keeping cool this summer try not to heat the planet or pollute the biosphere. Reducing our energy output will limit C02 emissions, whilst minimising single-use beverage packaging helps keep waste out of landfill and ensures no pollution enters our oceans," explains Silverwood.

Be cool, stay cool, keep the planet cool."

Beverage aficionado, Myles Anceschi, Australia's Managing Director for SodaStream firmly believes in the importance of staying hydrated, and having a little fun along the way.

'We've done consumer research which has found 80% of Australians don't drink enough water. Even mild dehydration can cause fatigue, light-headedness and headaches, so when it's hot, prevention is key."

'However, many people often find it difficult to drink enough tap water to stay properly hydrated, and that's where a home carbonation system like SodaStream comes in."

'Australia's summer can be unforgiving, so adding fruit and bubbles is an easy way to keep things fresh, especially for children. Keeping hydrated is an important way myself and my family try and keep healthy, and SodaStream helps make tap water exciting."

Interview with Myles Anceschi

Question: Can you talk about the importance of being hydrated?

Myles Anceschi: One of the most important things you can do for your health is stay hydrated, even if the weather isn't hot or if you aren't playing a heap of sport or exercising.

By staying hydrated you're reducing stress on your heart and vascular system, meaning that your muscles work more effectively. Studies have found that staying hydrated can reduce fatigue, make you more productive and promote clearer thinking.

Dehydration can affect people in different ways but the symptoms can include; dry mouth and skin, sleepiness, headaches, light-headedness and feeling thirsty, with extreme cases of dehydration requiring hospital treatment.

Question: Are you surprised that 80% of Australians don't drink enough water?

Myles Anceschi: We're not surprised to hear that 80% of Australian's don't drink enough water. We know that people find it difficult to drink the recommended amount to stay healthy and hydrated, with nearly six million Aussies drinking less than two glasses of water each day.

The perfect daily amount of water can vary depending on your gender, age, health and activities but the average adult needs between two and two and a half litres (or eight to ten cups) of water each day to stay in optimal health.

Question: Why does every household need their own SodaStream?

Myles Anceschi: If you are like many Australian's who find it difficult to drink enough water to stay hydrated and healthy, then drinking sparkling water can help, as it makes water exciting and interesting.

Many families tell us that having a SodaStream helps them to get their kids to drink healthy, flavoured beverages. Kids love the bubbly water more than the sugar, and every drink can be customised with fruit, or a little natural juice. A great way to get the all important water in and the sugar out.

Also having your own SodaStream in your kitchen means that you can reduce your environmental footprint by banishing any plastic bottle waste from store bought soda water or other sparkling mixers.

Question: Which of the SodaStream recipes is your favourite?

Question: Can you tell us how SodaStream works?

Myles Anceschi: Fill the SodaStream bottle with plain water to the fill line and refrigerate
Attach the bottle to the machine via the simple Snap and lock mechanism
Press down on the carbonating button or block, until you've reached the desired level of fizziness

Remove carbonating bottle and enjoy as is, add fresh fruit or juice, or alternatively add your favourite Sodastream flavour.

Question: Why is SodaStream a better alternative to soft-drink?

Myles Anceschi: SodaStream sparkling water is a better alternative to soft-drink as it contains no kilojoules or sugar. Simple, convenient sparkling straight from your tap!

If you prefer a flavoured beverage, Sodastream flavours contain 2/3 less sugar than store bought alternatives.

Question: How do you cool down, with the SodaStream, in Summer?

Myles Anceschi: Start your day by drinking a big glass of water as soon as you get up and keep a bottle of water in your bag, on your desk at work or next to your bed and sip frequently to stay hydrated and keep cool during the hotter months.

It is also important to remember, when you're exercising, to make sure you hydrate before, during and after.

Also be careful of how many iced coffees or chilled energy drinks you consume as they are full of stimulants and caffeine that have a dehydrating effect - the opposite of what you want it hot weather.
