Split Seconds Tour Dates

A record for anyone who has ever changed cities, countries, houses or even just their mind, Rest & Relocation is the second album proper for Melbourne based lyrical indie-pop purveyors Split Seconds.

Much loved for their driving, harmonic pop, best exemplified in previous singles ‘Bed Down, Top Floor’ and ‘Halfway There’, Split Seconds took the plunge in 2012 by relocating from Perth to Melbourne. As is often the case, the sea change provided mixed results. Led by WAMI winning vocalist Sean Pollard, they said goodbye to two members (one back to Perth and the other to the world of sub continental cricket writing), welcomed one (Leicester bred Barrie Wilson, formerly of UK based Rough Trade alumni Milk White, White Teeth) and channelled their energies into building an ambitious home studio in the inner north songwriters haven of Brunswick.

Friday Nights at NGV returns for Degas: A New Vision

Venue:NGV International
Date:24 June – 16 September 2016
Fee:Online: $24 Member / $30 Adult / $12 Child On the door: $29 Member / $35 Adult / $15 Child

ARIA Award winning singer-songwriter Clare Bowditch; PJ Harvey-collaborator Mick Harvey; critically acclaimed five-piece Augie March; Brisbane indie rock trio The Grates; and legendary US rock singer Kid Congo with The Pink Monkey Birds lead the lineup for the next Friday Nights at NGV series for Degas: A New Vision.

Over thirteen weeks, Friday Nights at NGV will showcase after-hours art, live music and entertainment, with an outstanding lineup of headline acts including:

Friday 24 June – Clare Bowditch

Friday 1 July – The Goon Sax

Friday 8 July – The Grates

Friday 15 July – Husky

Friday 22 July – The Apartments

Friday 29 July – Halfway

Friday 5 August – Jen Cloher

Friday 12 August – The Painted Ladies

Friday 19 August – Jess Ribeiro

Friday 26 August – Kid Congo & The Pink Monkeybirds (USA)

Friday 2 September – Mick Harvey: Intoxicated Man – The Songs of Serge Gainsbourg

Friday 9 September – Pierce Brothers

Friday 16 September – Augie March

Tony Ellwood, Director, NGV, said, ‘Friday Nights at NGV continues to be one of the most popular events on our programming calendar, offering a unique opportunity to see an array of local and international music acts as well as late-night access to Degas: A New Vision, pop-up talks, foods, drinks and more.’

American rock musician Kid Congo Powers, best known as former guitarist for Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, The Gun Club and The Cramps, will present his newest album with The Pink Monkey Birds, La Araña Es La Vida, when he brings his raw style of garage-punk to the NGV Great Hall on 26 August.

Fresh from a European tour with PJ Harvey, Melbourne-based musician Mick Harvey will play tracks from his latest album Delirium Tremens and previous two volumes Intoxicated Man and Pink Elephants on 2 September. Featuring reinterpretations of songs by seminal French artist Serge Gainsbourg, this special performance will complement Degas: A New Vision by bringing together the work of Degas and Gainsbourg, two iconic French artists.

Collaborative Australian music act, The Painted Ladies, will honour the music of Aboriginal music pioneer Vic Simms, who toured with Buddy Holly and Shirley Bassey while still in high school in the 1960s. Tracks from Simms’ album Loner, considered a lost classic, will be performed when The Painted Ladies take to the stage on 12 August.

The Friday Nights lineup also includes teenage trio The Goon Sax who have built up a distinctive indie-pop sound and been hailed by Pitchfork as a ‘distinctly Australian blend of honesty and unpretentiousness.’

Other highlights include Melbourne singer Jess Ribeiro with a new, darker sound honed while working with producer Mick Harvey on her sophomore album Kill It Yourself, as well as indie folk band, Husky, whose love of Bob Dylan and Neil Young is apparent through the artful songwriting of Melburnian Husky Gawenda and his cousin Gideon Preiss.

Eight-piece band Halfway will present their unique Australian take on country music, including tracks from their new album, The Golden Halfway Record, which was recorded in the home of country music, Nashville, Tennessee.

Melbourne singer-songwriter Jen Cloher will showcase the husky-voiced tunes for which she has earned ARIA and Australian Music Prize nominations, while multi-instrumentalist twin brothers the Pierce Brothers, who recently finished a world tour, will also perform.

The setting for Friday Nights at NGV is inspired by 1920s Parisian café style, with live jazz, food and drinks. Instrumental and vocal ensembles will set the tone for a sophisticated and relaxed evening of art, dining, music and conversation.

The world premiere exhibition Degas: A New Vision will display the biggest collection of Degas works ever seen in Australia, with more than 200 pieces which reveal the artist’s talent in a new light; not only as a great master of painting, but also as a master of drawing, printmaking, sculpture and photography.

Date:Friday 10th – Sunday 12th June, 2016

The 31st annual Barunga Festival will feature a strong line-up of events, activities and local and national performers to showcase the talented and unique women in all of our communities.

Heading up the 2016 performers is Wildflower band, an inspirational group of five young women from Mammadawerre, who perform pop music in Indigenous language. Courtney Barnett will perform each evening with acclaimed singer songwriter Jen Cloher. Best-selling children’s singer, film and TV star, Justine Clarke, will thrill children with her two morning shows.

Barunga combines three very powerful drivers of community participation - Music, Sport and Culture - with a strong emphasis on cultural exchange and collaboration.   It offers a unique opportunity for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people to come together and celebrate remote community life.

Festival-goers can camp under the stars, enjoy everything from Indigenous rock bands to a game of Australian Rules football, or join in a traditional dance ceremony.  Barunga Festival is an alcohol and smoke free, family-focused event with a healthy food policy.

Importantly, Barunga Festival supports the development of micro businesses for local Indigenous people, as well as training and employment.  Art stalls, tour guiding, didgeridoo making opportunities – the list of small business participation and development grows each year.

Date:Saturday June 11th, 2016
Fee:Dinner & Show $74.00+bf General Admission $23+bf On the Door $25 (if available)

Hot off a sell-out show at this year’s Adelaide Fringe Festival The Amy Winehouse Show “Back To Black” returns to Melbourne for a spectacular show at The Yarraville Club on Saturday, June 11.

One of Australia’s finest and most versatile vocalists, Atlanta Coogan (ex-Black Sorrows) has been blowing audiences away and selling out some of Melbourne’s finest venues (including The Flying Saucer Club and Bennetts Lane) with her tribute to the great songstress Amy Winehouse, who tragically died in 2011, aged 27.

Giving music fans the full Amy Winehouse experience, Atlanta sings with backing of the All Star Little Big Band (Steve Hadley, Steve Morrison, Pete Mitchell, Matt Poynter, Matt Dwyer), complete with horn section, taking the audience on a journey through Amy’s short but extraordinary life, performing her classics including Valerie, Rehab and of course, Back To Black, to name a few, while telling her incredible story.

Originally put together as a one-off event for the first anniversary of Amy’s tragic demise, The Amy Winehouse Show – Back To Black has become one of this city’s most sought after acts, finding a growing audience whilst celebrating the life and music of the brilliant performer, highlighting the biggest hits and showstoppers she was so well known for.

Band Of Horses Show

Venue:The Forum Theatre
Date:Sun 24 July, 2016

In the past, Band of Horses founder and leader Ben Bridwell would literally run away from home to write: Holing up in a secluded cabin or other such remote location, emerging months later with new songs for his band to flesh out and fully animate. This time-whether by happenstance or conscious need for a drastic change-Ben stayed home to write. In the estrogen-charged atmosphere of a home shared with his wife and four-yes, four--daughters he allowed his everyday experiences to inform his process. Between dropping off and picking up the girls, changing diapers, and playing dress up, Bridwell spent every precious free minute-often the wee hours on the morning into daybreak--in his garage writing.

Leo Sayer and Lulu

Two of the great voices of British pop, Leo Sayer and Lulu, are joining together for the first time for a tour of Australia and will perform in Brisbane on June 30.

Lulu was just 15 when she recorded her first UK hit, a version of the Isley Brothers' Shout, and in 1967 her stunning performance of the theme tune from the film To Sir, With Love (and in which she also appeared alongside Sidney Poitier) took her to the top of charts around the world. Hits like The Boat I Row, Let's Pretend and Love Loves to Love, Love established her as one of the most dynamic voices of the era and the way she lit up a screen made her a natural for television events like the Eurovision Song Contest (which she won in 1969 representing the UK).

Born a few months before Lulu, Leo Sayer broke through as a singer and songwriter with a string of hits including The Show Must Go On, One Man Band, Long Tall Glasses and Moonlighting. His career went into overdrive in 1977 with two global chart-toppers, the disco-fired You Make Me Feel like Dancing (a Grammy winner for best rhythm and blues song) and the ballad, When I Need YouSayer had phenomenal nine Top 20 albums and 14 Top 20 singles from 1973 to 1983 and has sold more than 80 million albums worldwide, and in 2006 a remix of his 1977 hit Thunder In My Heart took him back to the top of the UK charts. Leo has lived in Australia since 2005 and became an Australian citizen in 2009.

In 2015 after promoters suggested that Leo and Lulu tour together Lulu went to see Leo performing in London and was blown away by his vital stage presence and a voice that could match her own soulful delivery. In fact, she was so impressed she joined him on stage that same night!  The two music legends hit it off so well that the Leo & Lulu tour was on.

N’fa Jones Touring with Remi

The first taste for 2014 of N’fa Jones forthcoming album Black + White Noise is ‘Money Better Come’. The title of the track speaks for itlself. ‘Money Better Come’ is a Styalz Fuego production with Kaylen Behr featuring on the chorus giving it that good ol’ fashion Summer vibe we all need.
Summing up the way N’fa Jones often feels the life of an artist plays out, the track comes with fun and clever video clip directed by Nic McRobbie. While reflecting on the fragility of life, N’fa still manages to poke a bit of fun at himself, while singing (yep singing) melodies, telling an honest story, and of course kickin a rapped verse to keep the Hip Hop alive.
Get a taste for it while N’fa is on national tour with fellow House of Beige family member and triple j Unearthed winner Remi through February.

Friday 7th Feb - Coniston Lane Front Room (Ex-Wasteland) – Brisbane w/ Remi
Saturday 8th Feb – Northcote Social Club - Melbourne w/ Remi
Friday 14th Feb – Goodgod Small Club - Sydney w/ Remi
Saturday 15th Feb – Rocket Bar – Adelaide w/ Remi
Sunday 16th Feb – The Rosemount Hotel Beer Garden, Perth – FREE ENTRY! w/ Charlie Bucket

The Superjesus 2014 Tour Dates

Respected Aussie rock outfit The Superjesus is hitting the road for the Australia Day long weekend, celebrating in fine style with three live shows.  They’ll kick off on 24th January at Waves Wollongong, then head to Bateau Bay Hotel on the 25th, with a massive Australia Day gig on 26th January at Garrison Point, Bankstown.

Following their successful ‘Reformation’ tour earlier this year, which saw the band playing live for the first time in ten years, The Superjesus has been working on new material and are looking forward to road testing it on their fans, with further live dates to come.

The Superjesus rose to prominence in Adelaide in 1994, and was eagerly embraced for their electrifying live shows, spearheaded by charismatic front woman, Sarah McLeod.  They were quick to find support from national broadcaster Triple J and were on their way, enjoying multiplatinum album success with Sumo, Jetage and Rock Music and delivering hit singles such as ‘Gravity’, ‘Secret Agent Man’, ‘Shut My Eyes’ and ‘Down Again’.

The Superjesus live in January 2014:

Friday 24th Waves, Wollongong
Saturday 25th Bateau Bay Hotel, Bateau Bay
Sunday 26th Australia Day concert, Garrison Point, Bankstown
