Brian Maloney When Doves Cry Interview

Question: What is the inspiration behind When Doves Cry?

Brian Maloney: I just think that Prince is an amazing and talented artist. I was listening to the song one rainy day and was really feeling his lyrics in my heart. It rolled around inside me for a while, mixing with all my emotions and thoughts about people and relationships; and, one day, I got up the courage to bring it to my piano.

Question: Why did you choose Rock-N-Roll over the music you grew listening to, Blues and Jazz?

Brian Maloney: Rock seemed to set off a real spark inside me. I mean, music, in general gets my blood pumping; but, you know, with rock 'n roll, I felt the energy in the amps and guitars, and I was totally hooked. But, then there's also the jazz side of things. I love jazz...I actually share the birthplace of Miles Davis--one of our jazz greats. [Alton, Illinois]

Question: Did you have any pre-conceived ideas about the music industry?

Brian Maloney: Well, I don't know about pre-conceived ideas; but, I will say that now that I have had a few eye-opening experiences, I have to say that I believe the industry needs a revolution of some kind. It seems to lack honesty and passion. I'd like to see people making things happen for artists because they believe in the art. I guess there probably are some who do have this kind of honest passion; but, I think it's rare in this industry. There are so many different opportunities to make money in the industry that I can see how it might be hard to stay honest. I just wish is was less rare to have those qualities.

Question: Do you write your own songs? What's your inspiration?

Brian Maloney: Yes, I do enjoy writing my own songs. I have for years and find it to be the most fulfilling way for me to express my emotions and thoughts. The song-writing process can morph onto so many different paths and forms and traverse so many different personal and social experiences. It can be an incredibly painful journey sometimes; and other times, it's a lot of fun.

I am very inspired by living life! And, by witnessing the power music has on the lives of all peoples, to bring joy, revelation, hope.

Question: What music/artists do you listen to when you are not playing your own?

Brian Maloney: Well, it's very rare that I'm not working through something in my own music. But, when I do take some downtime and listen to other artists, those most inspiring to me are Sigur Ros; Radiohead--amazing creativity, Ravi Shankar--moving artistry in general; and, The Beatles.

Question: What's next? Tour/Album/Single?

Brian Maloney: What's next is the release of my full album. We're looking at releasing that in June.

Question: Was there a moment you contemplated throwing in the towel?

Brian Maloney: Sure. I absolutely have. I'm sure that every artist goes through the dilemma, wondering if all the hardship and heartache is worth it . Is the process worth it, yea, absolutely. Again, just the process of writing a song is such a remarkable journey--because even with the emotional angst, there is emotional discovery that's very rewarding. I wouldn't give that up. Then there are the recording and performing journeys. Each is it's own world of valuable experiences.

Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?

Brian Maloney: Again, each of the two have their own appeal. Tracking songs is such an amazing experience; and, then performing them for your fans...wow! Even better.

Question: What/who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?

Brian Maloney: Actually, it was The Beatles. I believe that they inspire generations, today and beyond.

Question: What is the biggest challenge you have faced along the way to your musical success?

Brian Maloney: The biggest challenge is the conflict between 9 to 5 "grind" and the artist's lifestyle. I mean, do I go all out 100%? It's difficult to reconcile those two. You kinda have to make a choice; and, sometimes, before you have fans that support the music, you go through some tight times, financially, as an artist. But, if you enter the 9 to 5 world, you have a limited time for the art. So, yea, I go with the artist's way. And, really 150% is the only way to go.

Question: What's a typical day like?

Brian Maloney: You know, my mood is really dependent on the weather, I think. But, mostly, I wake up and get some tea and toast; then ride my bike for a while; sit over at the coffee shop, read and then I play some music, as much as I can. A great way to end the day whatever time it ends is a hot bath and more music.

Question: What has been your favourite part of becoming a music artist?

Brian Maloney: The best thing about being a musical artist is the ability to inspire the masses with my ability to create.

Question: If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

Brian Maloney: You know, anyone who creates with passion would be amazing to collaborate with. Actually, I would love to work with Charlie Chaplin, but I guess it's a little too late for that.

Question: Are you single? What do you look for in a partner?

Brian Maloney: Currently, yes, I am single. The musical process is incredibly time-consuming; so, whoever is in my future really must understand that.

Question: Do you have a website fans can visit?

Brian Maloney: Yea, check it out: www.brianmaloneymusic.com

Question: Can you tell us 5 things required for a happy healthy & enjoyable life?

Brian Maloney: Ok, well first, everyone needs to live their dreams. Then, five things would be:
1. community
2. good food
3. exercise
4. laughter
5. talking to your neighbours

Question: What message would you like to say to your fans?

Brian Maloney: If you have a cause, make sure you're willing to give your life for it; and if not, find another cause.
