Picking up where the dramatic cliffhanger left off, the firefighters are grieving over the loss of one of their own. Severide (Kinney) is AWOL having been on leave since the incident, while Casey (Spencer) continues to clash with Lieutenant Welch at Truck 66. Severide soon returns, moving in with Casey and Dawson (Raymund) to cope with his grief, but he's not his usual self.

Meanwhile, Chief Boden (Eamonn Walker, Tears of the Sun, The Messenger) spends time bonding with his father, however this is shortlived after he passes away, forcing Boden to leave the Firehouse to take care of his personal affairs. Casey also receives some startling news about his sister and ends up in a difficult position as he weighs up the consequences of protecting her, which would mean having to reveal the shocking truth. As the pressure builds, the Firehouse itself eventually goes under the microscope after a call goes horribly wrong.
