Zooey (Toni Collette) and Alec Morrison (Ioan Grufford), a married couple who are struggling to bridge the painful gap of losing their son that is developing between them.

Unable to conceive, the Morrisons await confirmation of a child to foster. One day a seven year old boy who calls himself "Eli" (Maurice Cole) appears on their doorstep quite mysteriously, explaining the foster agency has sent him.

The boy is old and wise beyond his years and provides the couple with moral support and advice on how to save their relationship. Adored by his foster mother and admired by his foster father, the child helps the couple reconnect and rekindle their relationship.
