Mothers' Day

Drawing from her thirty-year career as a rural midwife, Fiona McArthur shares her love of working with women, families and health professionals in her books. On Mothers' Day, Fiona notes that while all mothers fill her with admiration, it is teen mothers that have held a special place in her heart. Of these young women, Fiona says, 'I'm pretty passionate about cheering for young mothers and meeting the challenges of engagement with them.'

Fiona was one of the co-founders of the TIMTAMs group (Teenage Information Mornings for Teens as Mums) at her country hospital in northern NSW. This drop-in antenatal group for mums helps many teens adjust to life as new mums and Fiona counts many past participants as friends today. These young women and their experiences became the inspiration for Mothers' Day. As Fiona explains, one of the lead characters in the book, Jacinta, 'grew from the young mum's classes we held every Tuesday.' So natural was the writing process that Fiona jokes, 'Mothers' Day almost wrote itself!'

Fiona's midwifery career has also meant that she does all her writing before most other people are even awake, between the unusual hours of 4am and 6am, at which time she starts her working day at the hospital.

When Iain McCloud and his pregnant teenage daughter, Jacinta, arrive in Rivertown to await the birth of Jacinta's baby, they are met by the local midwife Noni Frost, herself a single mum. The chemistry between Iain and Noni is instant but when drama starts to occur, everything quickly comes to a head in Rivertown. Set among the white gum trees and flowing waters of the NSW northern rivers, this is a heartfelt and dramatic story about new babies, new friends and new loves, which shows that when strong women come together in a time of crisis, they can overcome even the greatest odds.

In Mothers' Day, Fiona McArthur explores the indomitable power of a family's love, demonstrating how all obstacles can be resolved by a family's love and support. Fiona's love of the Australian landscape meshes beautifully with warm, funny multigenerational characters as she highlights the unique challenges rural and remote families face, and the strength shared between women. Mothers and families of all different shapes and sizes are celebrated in this life-affirming rural drama, released just in time for Mother's Day.
