In a small, remote, mountain-top primary school in the Kenyan bush, hundreds of children jostle for a chance of free education newly promised by the government. One applicant causes astonishment when he seeks enrolment. He is Maruge (OLIVER LITONDO), an 84-year-old veteran of his countrys 1950s Mau Mau uprisings against the British colonists. Having fought for his country he now feels he must also have the chance at an education long denied - even if he has to share a classroom with six-year-old children.

Opposed by parents and officials alike, Maruge finds a champion in head teacher Jane Obinchu (NAOMIE HARRIS) who, moved by his passionate plea, joins in a fierce fight to ensure the old man gets his place in the classroom.
