Amanda Clarke is dead.

"I'm not sure who found Amanda Clarke's body. I think it was her mother, but I may be wrong… I imagine it was dinnertime, and she called them both- 'Amanda, Daniel, come to the table now'... In the hall she called Amanda's name again, shouting up the stairs to her daughter's empty bedroom and, when there was no response, she returned to the kitchen, its back door opening on to the smooth green lawn that sloped down to the river's edge…"

Amanda Clarke's body is found floating facedown by the riverbank, and no one knows what happened. As rumours fly and fear grows, it seems that everyone suspects Lyndon, one of Amanda's friends. He's known for his temper, his cruelty and his criminal family- and now the police want to talk to him.

Fifteen-year-old Winter went to the same school and hung out in the same places as Amanda. As she finds herself alone in trying to defend Lyndon, Winter learns that you can never really know someone- and the answers she has been looking for are closer than she ever wanted to believe.

The summer of 1973 has stripped a sleepy suburb of its innocence and will forever change the lives of the teenagers that inhabit it, in this darkly provocative novel by established adult's author Gerogia Blain.

Georgia Blain has published four novels; Closed for Winter (which was made into a feature film), Candelo, The Blind Eye and Names for Nothingness. She was named one of the Sydney Morning Herald's Best Young Novelists in 1998, and has been shortlisted for the NSW Premier's Literary Awards. She has been published internationally, with her work appearing in publications such as Granta and The Independent Magazine. Her most recent book Births Deaths Marriages was shortlisted for the Nita B Kibble Award in 2009. She lives in Sydney with her partner and daughter. Her interest in writing for teenagers was sparked by starting to share books with her daughter. Darkwater is her first young adult book.
