Honeysuckle and the Harbour

It's all happening in Honeysuckle. Once an industrial landscape, Newcastle's vibrant Honeysuckle Precinct is packed with restaurants, bars and cultural activities all linked by a foreshore walkway boasting views of the bustling harbour – an integral and enduring part of the Newcastle set. Whether it's for family-friendly relaxation or a weekend away with friends, the Honeysuckle precinct offers a raft of activities to entertain and delight.

Newcastle Museum is just one of the heritage-listed harbour front buildings preserved by Honeysuckle's award-winning transformation, and is full of interactive displays and tales of the city's colourful past; after a fascinating and entertaining day at the Museum, visitors can enjoy cosy meals with glorious views of the harbour at the spectacular Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club.

At Lee Wharf, cargo sheds are home to living history on display at the fascinating Maritime Centre where over 200 years of Newcastle's maritime past is on exhibition. The centre tells the stories of wrecks and rescues, the port and the city, all while visitors can enjoy the views of a modern working port. The Honeysuckle Hotel is always buzzing with lively entertainment and their Rum Bar – open Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights with over 90 different rums from around the world, is a great place to meet up with friends.

Returning this year on 13 June from 5pm, Winter Heat is a family friendly event complete with fire breathers, street performers, drummers and much more. Bring your camera, as it'll be a night to remember! It's by far Honeysuckle's most visually impressive night of the year. $10 gourmet food tasting plates, boutique Hunter wines and craft beers and ciders are available.

Honeysuckle is also Newcastle's hub for cruises – and those wishing to obtain a different perspective of the city should head out onto the water aboard Nova Cruises' open ocean cruiser, which offers guests three fun filled hours of seafaring adventure surrounded by whales, dolphin pods, playing seals, and other sea life which flock to Newcastle over winter. For further details on ticket prices, cruise options and departure details visit www.novacruises.com.au

Alternatively, Moonshadow Cruises operates Newcastle Harbour City Sights and Sounds cruises every Wednesday and Sunday at 1030am and 130pm, respectively. Guests cruise the impressive and historic coal loading facilities as they view the exciting transformation of Newcastle's foreshore and its changing surroundings from the unobstructed viewing decks of Moonshadow IV. Passengers will be treated to both great service and entertaining and informative commentary on the port's operation and economic importance in the heart of the city. Complimentary morning tea is served aboard this service and a selection of drinks and snacks are also available from the fully licensed bar – the perfect place from which to watch the world go by!
