Lauren Glezer Searching For Tall Interview

Gifted Melbourne singer songwriter, Lauren Glezer has announced her new single, This Living (out September 12), lifted from her debut EP, Searching For Tall set for release on September 19. Glezer will be celebrating with an east coast tour kick starting in Canberra at The Co Op on September 10 and moving through to Melbourne for shows at The Wesley Anne on September 20, The Evelyn Hotel on September 28 and The Breslin Gallery on November 9.

Lead single, This Living is a stunningly poetic folk pop tune. Glezer's honest, raw vocals set amidst the beautifully simple musicianship work perfectly to complement her heartfelt songwriting. 'It'll be alright in the end, and if it's not, it's not the end." An ode to those who work too hard, Glezer explains, 'this song was written in the name of my dad and for anyone that feels like they haven't done it right. It's never too late to make a change."

Filmed by Edwin Tedjokusumo (The Pierce Brothers, Clairy Browne & The Bangin' Rackettes), the clip for This Living 'was always going to be about the mundane ways of every suit wearing, train taking corporate," says Glezer. The clip follows a corporate man through the daily grind of working life and is contrasted by a sweet, carefree young girl playing hopscotch and chalking the street. 'For me, the contrast between these two characters shows how many of us have forgotten about the child that resides within us. We are too busy working hard to consider how we want to be spending our precious time on earth… I hope this film clip raises one simple question for people; am I living the life I had imagined when I was a child?"

Two years in the making, Searching For Tall follows themes of self-discovery, love, loss and fear. 'My EP is about knowing that everything we are searching for in our external world is there to be found in the internal world. It's about losing love, but knowing that every day promises new opportunities," an expressive Glezer enthuses. Produced by Richard Stolz at Woodstock Studios alongside her long-time band, Conrad Tracy (owner of Revolver Drums) and Ryan Monro (Bass guitarist from The Cat Empire), the EP is radiating with a warmth and positivity that is hard to come by. Each song has been carefully crafted with the perfect balance of space and beauty to allow Glezer's generously raw vocal to impress and wow the listener.

Excited to hit the road and perform her new material, Glezer says, 'I've been told that I deliver a very honest performance. I've never been into the whole stage persona – what you see is what you get…. minus shoes. I can't wear shoes when I sing. I'm not sure why, but I just can't!"

Interview with Lauren Glezer

Question: What inspired the video clip for This Living?

Lauren Glezer: My Dad. He is a lawyer, living the corporate life. I think my Dad is the most amazing man in the world and I'm sure he could have chosen to do anything he wanted with his time. I guess I often find myself wondering if this is the life he had imagined for himself, and if it's not, will he ever do anything to change that. There are so many people living their lives according to other's expectations. I hope this song reminds people to make sure that they are living the life they desire. The little girl in this film clip represents the innocent child within us all. All she wants to do is run around and spread colour everywhere she goes. Don't we all want the same?

Question: How would you describe your music?

Lauren Glezer: Hhhmmm. VERY emotional. Poetic. Heart on your sleeve.

Question: Do you write your own songs? What's your inspiration?

Lauren Glezer: I write all my own songs. My inspiration is my internal world and the world that surrounds me. I could write a song based on a single feeling alone or a few words someone says to me. I am always meeting new people, hearing their stories and feeling inspired to write them into a song. I also write about my own experiences, what it's like to be me. I aim to be as honest as possible in my songs - highlighting the many shades of the human experience. Happiness, sadness, fear, loneliness, all of it. we can all relate to all of it and knowing this unites us, I believe.

Question: What music/artists do you listen to when you are not playing your own?

Lauren Glezer: I listen to all sorts of things. I'm a big fan of Bon Iver. I listen to lots of local music as well as music older music like Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan. I definitely learn a thing or two about song writing from those two!

Question: What was the main inspiration behind your EP, Searching For Tall?

Lauren Glezer: The main inspiration for the EP was "the search". Over the past few years (my early-mid 20's) I have found myself constantly searching for something. Whether it be love, a new country to explore or a different hair style, they all led me back to the same conclusion- I already have all I need within me. Sometimes you break up with the boyfriend, you run out of money to travel, or you've tried every hair style that ever existed. Then what's left? Yourself. This EP is about me getting to know myself through it all and learning to love and accept what I find.

Question: Was there a moment you contemplated throwing in the towel?

Lauren Glezer: UUmm can there be moments? Playing a gig to an empty room is always a tough one. This experience always brings up the question, why am I doing this again? Then i remember, this is what I feel I can contribute to the world. We can all contribute many of our gifts and one of mine is song, so I better keep on playing! Don't get me wrong, I LOVE what I do, but it can definitely me challenging to put yourself out there all the time.

Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?

Lauren Glezer: Performing live. Wow, there is absolutely NOTHING like playing to a room full of people that connect with the music you're playing. Even if it's only two words I sing that gives someone something, I'm happy.

Question: What/who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?

Lauren Glezer: My inspiration was sharing my experience of life with others. Initially I wanted to be a counsellor, but soon enough I realised I was way too sensitive. So I moulded this sensitivity into the shape of song... and I sang! The connection I feel to others when I can see they completely identify with whatever experience or emotion I'm singing about is incredible. We all need to feel more connected to one an other. This is the only way we can move forward from the scary state the world is currently in.

Question: What is the biggest challenge you have faced along the way to your musical success?

Lauren Glezer: Comparing myself to others. Whether it's my childhood best friends or my friends from the music industry. Comparing myself to to others always results in my thinking I'm not good enough. I am who i am. I do what I do and I love it. Sometimes it's challenging, but this the path I have chosen for now and I chose it for a reason. We all need to lear to love ourselves as we are and stop the comparisons.

Question: What's a typical day like?

Lauren Glezer: I wake up, contemplate exercising and then go an eat breakfast! At the moment i am waitressing a few days a week. The rest of the time I'm either writing a song, or working on the release of my EP, Searching For Tall. Oh and lots of socialising. My friends and family are my world. Sometimes I dance too. I love to dance!

Question: What has been your favourite part of becoming a music artist?

Lauren Glezer: I get to touch people. Or at least, I hope I touch people. Just knowing that my songs are out there in the world and perhaps making a difference to someone's day is definitely enough for me.

Question: If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

Lauren Glezer: Joni Mitchell. Now that would be a dream come true!
