MSOW Melbourne Writers Fest

Melbourne Star Observation Wheel To Host Special Events During The 2018 Melbourne Writers Festival

The Melbourne Star Observation Wheel (MSOW) has partnered with the 2018 Melbourne Writers Festival and will be hosting a number of special events and experiences that celebrate the writers and writing of our city. On Sunday August 26, the Melbourne Star will host an afternoon High Tea & Artist Conversation with award-winning Melbourne writer, teacher and lawyer Alice Pung . At the event, MSOW and Melbourne Writers Festival will unveil a series of new poems, written and recorded by seven local writers that will play over MSOW's in-flight audio system between August 27 and August 30.

The High Tea & Conversation with Alice Pung will include a live author's talk with Alice where she will reflect on living in Footscray and how the suburb and her experiences growing up in Melbourne have influenced her work. Following the artist talk, guests will board a 30-minute flight over the city, where they will hear a series of poems in place of Melbourne Star's regular flight commentary. Each poem is focused on a different suburb of Melbourne, all of which can be spotted from Melbourne Star, and have been recorded by the artists as part of the partnership with Melbourne Writers Festival. These artists include: Maxine Beneba Clarke (Footscray), Ellena Savage (Brunswick), Angela Pippos (MCG), Khalis Warsame (Werribee), Rijn Collins (Westgate Bridge), Rajith Savanadasa (Preston) and Yamiko Marama (St Kilda). The artists and their work have been selected by the Melbourne UNESCO City of Literature Office.

The Melbourne Writers Festival flight commentary will remain playing on Melbourne Star from Monday August 27 – Thursday August 30, allowing guests the rare opportunity to view the city and suburbs through the eyes and experiences of local artists.

The High Tea with Alice Pung event tickets are $40.00 per person and includes a thirty-minute artist conversation, light snacks, beverages and a 30-minute flight on the Melbourne Star Observation Wheel.
