Under the direction of Academy Award nominee Gus Van Sant, MILK relives the last eight years of Harvey Milk's life. Soon after, Milk enters in to thepolitical race and is elected to San Francisco's Board of Supervisors in 1977, on his third attempt.

During that period, the political agendas of Milk and those of another newly elected supervisor, Dan White (Josh Brolin), increasinglydiverge and their personal destinies tragically converge. In 1978, both Milk and the city's mayor, George Moscone, were shot wereshot dead by former city supervisor, White, who blamed his former colleagues for denying his attempt to rescind his resignation fromthe board.

1972 - Milk moves to the Castro District in San Francisco - the seed of the revolution is planted
1973 - Milk comes 10th out of 32 candidates in the state election with 16,900 votes
1973 - In response to the Eureka Valley Merchants Association (EVMA) trying to prevent gays from obtaining business licenses,Milk founds the Castro Village Association with other gay businesses to encourage gays to buy only from gaybusinesses
1975 - Milk abandons his long hair and hippie clothing to be seen as a serious candidate for the 1975 election
1977 - The Save Our Children Christian Fundamentalist group lead by Anita Bryant fights the passing of laws againstdiscrimination based on sexual orientation.
1977 - Despite the growing movement against homosexuals, Harvey Milk is made the first openly gay, non-incumbent man inthe United States to win an election to public office
1978 - Supervisor Dan White resigns from his position on the Board of Supervisors. His police colleagues convince him toreconsider his resignation. Mayor Mascone agrees but then assigns a replacement after persuasion from otherSupervisors
1978 - Dan Wight enters City Hall through a basement window so as to avoid metal detectors and shoots Mayor Mascone andHarvey Milk dead
1978 - Between 25,000 - 40,000 people gather to march in a candle light vigal in memory of Milk's contribution to the gay rightsmovement
