Newcastle: Hotspot for Winter Whale Watching

With winter upon us, Newcastle is gearing up for one of nature's greatest shows – the annual whale migration from May – September.

It is estimated over 20,000 majestic humpback whales will explore the east coast of Australia this year as they migrate to the warmer water up north, and Newcastle offers visitors some of the country's prime vantage points on land, as well as on the water.

Top vantage points on the land include:

Newcastle Memorial Walk

Recently opened to commemorate the century of Anzac, Newcastle Memorial Walk offers visitors striking 360 degree views of the coast line along the cliff tops. The 430m boardwalk offers a perfect vantage point to marvel and enjoy the creatures of the sea in their natural habitat.

o   Nobby's Lighthouse

Open to the public every Sunday from 10am until 2pm (free entry). Nobby's Lighthouse is located atop the famous Nobby's Headland, with sweeping views across the Pacific Ocean, making this an ideal location from which to spot whales on their way without leaving the mainland.

Fort Scratchley

Fort Scratchley offers a magnificent viewing platform set high above Newcastle city. You can catch a glimpse of the whales as they dance along the coastline. Entry to the fort is free, with binoculars available for hire from the Fort's Artillery Store for those keen to get an even closer look.

King Edward Park

King Edward Park is a popular picnic and barbeque spot for locals and visitors alike. It offers breathtaking ocean views to relax and unwind while enjoying the company of friends or family during a weekend getaway.

Those seeking lunch with a view, relax and unwind at one of Newcastle's many beachside dining options including Rustica, Jonah's on the Beach, Merewether Surfhouse, Juicy Beans on the Beach or Bistro Sandbar Newcastle Beach.
