Red Gum BBQ

Mornington Peninsula's Red Hill has a new offering to add to its growing list of good food destinations, with Red Gum BBQ opening the doors to their highly anticipated new permanent home, following the transformation of a local mechanics warehouse into an impressive home for BBQ and food lovers alike.

Following years of travelling from market to market armed with a small Texas Offset, a 3m x 3m Marquee and a passion to create authentic, free range Aussie‐Smoked, American‐Style BBQ, husband and wife duo Melissa and Martin Goffin have opened the doors to their new 900sqm home in the heart of Red Hill, with the aim to serve their much-loved, delicious and authentic American BBQ cuisine from Wednesday to Sunday 11am-9pm, each week.

From small beginnings, the scale of the new site has provided the pair with the opportunity to create the space of their BBQ dreams, complete with a huge dedicated smoke pit, a customised bar hosting 10 different craft beers and ciders and locally produced wine, a BBQ and Southern US-centric retail store as well as hand-made wooden furniture, local flora and a the 4 metre long, Texas Offset, aptly named, Big Red that could feed an army – all hidden behind four giant industrial roller doors that open to connect Red Hill's beauty with this new indoor space.

With the food being Red Gum BBQ's major draw card to date, Melissa hopes that the new space will provide a platform for people young and old to visit and enjoy Red Gum's take on traditional BBQ the way Melissa enjoyed it growing up in Southern United States. 'Every dish sings home to me," said Melissa.

'Many that are served at Red Gum BBQ come from my own Grandma Cobb's handwritten recipe cards, which are all marked up with stars that show her thoughts on quality, friends names whom she got the recipes from or changes she made to perfect. They're recipes that I remember my Mom making as well which reminds me of how food connects people and places over time. It just makes me really proud that locals are letting me share that with them."

Although Melissa's fondness for BBQ dates back to her childhood, Melissa says it is husband Martin who has taken Red Gum BBQ's dishes and sauces to a new level.

'Martin's love of BBQ started back in 2002 during a visit to the States where he just loved the authenticity, the sauces, the meat, the connection, the culture – he was hooked. But it was while he was on Paternity leave in 2012 though that he decided to turn his obsession for BBQ into a shared offering, and that's when Red Gum BBQ was born. Since then, we can't believe how much people have taken to it and that we are here today. We are just so grateful."

Red Gum BBQ is located at 87 Arthurs Seat Rd, Red Hill, and provides 6-10 hour slow cooked free range Aussie-Smoked, American‐Style BBQ meats, sides and veggies. Slow cooked servings of Pulled Pork, Beef Brisket, Beef Rib, Baby Back Pork Rib and Chicken are sold by the gram, with sides and veggies including Mac n Cheese, Mary Lou's Spinach Salad (Mary Lou's own recipe, obviously), Bean Chili and Cornbread starting from $6 per serve.

Desserts include classic Chocolate Brownie and Banana Pudding, including frequent specials like Pumpkin Pie and Sour Cherry Pie, using cherries supplied by local Red Hill farms, and customers can also enjoy a creative selection of craft beers and boutique wines by the glass.
