SchoolAid National Floods Relief Day

HUNDREDS OF SCHOOLS REGISTER FOR THE SCHOOLAID NATIONAL FLOODS RELIEF DAY ON 17 FEBRUARY!

WITH FLOODING AND ITS AFTERMATH STILL IMPACTING ON COMMUNITIES IN NSW, QLD AND VICTORIA, AND FOLLOWING THE DEVASTATION OF CYCLONE YASI IN FAR NORTH QUEENSLAND, THE QLD GOVERNMENT IS URGING ALL AUSSIE SCHOOLS TO JOIN AS ONE AND PARTICIPATE IN THE 'SCHOOLAID FLOOD RELIEF APPEAL DAY' ON THURSDAY, 17 FEBRUARY 2011 AT THEIR SCHOOL, JOINING THE HUNDREDS ALREADY REGISTERED .

By observing a minute's silence at 1pm AEDST on 17 February, lowering flags to half mast, and each student bringing in a gold coin donation towards the Appeal, Aussie Schools are set to make a huge difference and raise funds for friends, neighbours and families overwhelmed by the flooding and its unprecedented impact. This national day of action is our schools' way of collectively banding together to show those affected just how much they care. SchoolAid is also responding to the devastation wreaked by Cyclone Yasi and will now direct a percentage of the funds raised from this national Appeal towards these embattled communities and schools in Far North Queensland.

The Queensland Government and Queensland's Minister for Education and Training, The Hon. Geoff Wilson MP, have thrown their support and endorsement behind the SchoolAid Floods Relief Appeal, with Minister Wilson stating:
"Queensland is at the beginning of a massive recovery and rebuilding effort following one of the most intense and devastating flood events in Australia's history. 75% of Queensland has been flood affected - and our schools, our teachers, our students and their families did not escape the floodwaters. I, like many others have been shocked by the extent of the damage cause by the floods, but I have also been amazed by the tireless efforts of so many to get our community - including our schools - back on their feet. On behalf of the Queensland Government I am proud to support and endorse the SchoolAid Appeal. With your support to appeals like SchoolAid we will not only recover from the destruction that has torn our state apart, we will emerge a stronger Queensland because of it "

In February 2009, SchoolAid's network of Aussie schools raised close to $1 million for the communities affected by Victoria's horrific bushfires, and as the disaster unfolds in Queensland and in other regions, SchoolAid is again ready with a call to action to schoolkids throughout the nation, who will be looking for an avenue to directly help as they arrive back to school later this month.
We urge every Australian school to get involved in the SchoolAid Floods Relief Appeal. Visit http://www.schoolaid.org.au/projects/schoolaid-floods-relief-appeal.aspx for all the details. Funds will be distributed to communities, children and schools most in need via SchoolAid's trusted charity partner network.
