Tallow

In a world of darkness, there is one who will bring light…

Tallow is Karen Brooks' seventh book in a career that has included being an actress, radio host, Army officer, waitress, media darling and bar maid. She is currently Associate Professor and Deputy Head of the School of Arts and Social Sciences at Southern Cross University. Her groundbreaking courses on 'grunge' (the first in the world) and her witchcraft have generated worldwide attention and have caused her to be dubbed 'the grudge queen', 'a six food two transvestite' (by Sam Newman), and a witch (by the local pastor).

Brooks starting writing Tallow several years ago, bringing it close to publication on a number of occasions, however it had never quite been the right time. When Leonie Tyle picked up the manuscript and couldn't tear herself away from the magnificent world and intriguing love story she immediately saw the potential for a novel that will appeal to all ages, and knew it had to be the first series to be published under her Woolshed Press imprint.

Since then, buzz has swept through the book community about the astonishing first book in the Curse of the Bond Riders trilogy and booksellers have eagerly supported this novel, making it one of the premier Australian young adult/crossover releases in 2009.

Tallow is about a young candlemaker's apprentice who is not what he seems. Set in a fantastical city akin to Renaissance Venice, it is a novel about friendship, love, empowerment, evil an the magic of candles.

When Pillar, a simple tradesmen, catches the bundle thrown to him by a mysterious, dying rider, he has no idea that he is holding the child who will one day decide the fate of the world. Identity carefully hidden, the child is taught the art of candlemaking. But as Tallow comes of age and unusual talents start to manifest, a homely craft transforms into a deadly one.

Candlemaking is a fascinating and ancient art that also becomes a metaphor for moulding, growth and change. The apprentice changes from simply being a malleable person forged in someone else's image into someone with backbone and strength. Dark at times, the trilogy, like candles themselves will continually offer a flicker of hope that is occasionally diminished, only to gather in strength and burn more brightly than ever!

The Curse of the Bond Riders series is a richly woven tapestry of intrigue, romance, mystery, political corruption and dark magic.

Tallow is the stunning first book in a series that will capture the hearts and minds of readers between 13 and 80.

Karen Brooks is a mistress of fantasy writing, internationally renowned academic and award-winning teacher.
