The 1000 Most Important Questions You Will Ever Ask Yourself

You don't have time. You're too busy. You're too tired. You'll do it tomorrow. You'll do it when you've done this. It's not that important. You've got better things to do. You're not confident. You're not smart enough.
We all make excuses. What's your favourite excuse? - You won't be needing it anymore.

The strategy of ignoring doesn't work in the long term. There is a psychological law - invented by Freud himself - that everything that is denied, ignored or suppressed eventually comes back. The skeletons in the closet do not simply dissolve and become invisible. They gather dust, and eventually someone finds them

Interview with Alyss Thomas

Question: Why did you decide to write The 1000 Most Important Questions You Will Ever Ask Yourself?

Alyss Thomas: As a psychotherapist, and a teacher of psychotherapy, there are a lot of ideas and information we use to encourage and help people - and I wanted to present some of them in a straightforward, accessible way so many different kinds of people across the world could use them in their own way, in their own situations. There are a lot of self help books, but a lot of them ask you to learn and follow the author's system - this is about empowering people to make small improvements in the way they relate to themselves and any problems they may have, to get more control and a more creative and constructive attitude, whatever your situation may be. It is not dependent on any system; you can use it in any time and place. I tried to write it free of jargon, and included timeless principles such as mindfulness and values.

Question: Why was it important for you to present the book in a clear quiz format?

Alyss Thomas: I structured the book in a quiz format as this makes it more enjoyable to use, and you can pick the sections that interest you, you do not have to read the whole thing. I always liked to read the quizzes in magazines - I think this is a fun way to learn something about yourself as it is interactive, you are joining in and not just reading.

Question: Can you share with us a couple of the most important questions?

Alyss Thomas: Perhaps the most important question, which is often very hard to answer, is What do I really want today/in this situation? If we can bear to really ask this and consider the answers, we are less likely to be confused, confusing, inconsistent and disappointed in ourselves - for example, if your kids are playing up today, it can help to remind yourself of the type of mother you decided you wanted to be, positive, calm and kind - you can take a longer term view of a bad day with the children, as what is most important here is being consistent with your attitude even when it is challenged.
