Interview with Candace Bushnell

Why did you decide to write about the Carrie Bradshaw before New York City in The Carrie Diaries?

Candace Bushnell: I've always wanted to write a coming of age story about a young woman who arrives in New York City. Who better to take on that journey than Carrie Bradshaw!

Was it difficult to write about a young Carrie, before Manolos, before New York City, after initially writing about her later in her life?

Candace Bushnell: It really wasn't. I love the character and I was thrilled to go back to her beginnings.

Did you ever think that your novel, Sex and the City, would become this huge, worldwide?

Candace Bushnell: I had no idea it would become as big as it has. It's wonderful. I'm thrilled so many women love the characters as much as I do.

Do you see a little bit of yourself in Carrie?

Candace Bushnell: I do indeed.

Carrie follows her dreams, which is inspiring, how else do you hope the character of Carrie Bradshaw inspires readers to do the same?

Candace Bushnell: Carrie handles her difficult situations with grace and style. She's an original.

Candace Bushnell fills in the blanks

I can't live without- books
If I wasn't a writer- I'd want to be an Olympic dressage equestrian
I feel most comfortable in- my own skin. You take yourself wherever you go.
The book I reread the most is- Custom of the Country by Edith Wharton. The main character, Undine Sprague, is wicked and wonderfully unreptant.
My favourite vintage piece is- a green fringed Michael Kors dress I bought in the late eighties.

The three words that describe me best are- imagination, passion, determination.
My mantra is- never have a mantra. Or a favourite colour.
The best decision I ever made- was to believe in myself.
The best part about writing The Carrie Diaries was- writing The Carrie Diaries! I know I'm lucky to have found work I love to do.
