The Lorne Sculpture Biennale

The Lorne Sculpture Biennale

The greatest and most diverse sculpture event in Australia, The Lorne Sculpture Biennale is now less than a month from opening on the picturesque Lorne Foreshore in Victoria. Sculpture of all shapes and sizes will create a remarkable outdoor gallery, accompanied by an impressive program of events spanning three weeks beginning Labor Day weekend.

This year's program features more than 100 of Australia's most innovative artists, competing for more than $100,000 worth of prizes, including a commission to create a major new permanent sculpture for Lorne.  Judging will be by Tony Ellwood, Director of NGV, Jason Smith, Director Heidi Museum of Modern Art and Heidi Wood, expat artist living in Paris.

With a series of free outdoor events, including a mix of temporary and permanent pieces with 41 major outdoor sculptures presented along the beautiful coastline from Lorne Pier to the Erskine River; large and small artworks, performance art, guided tours, sound and light installations, night events, workshops and a range of educational programs aimed at all age groups.

Curator Julie Collins says 2014's festival will be bigger than ever. 'This is Victoria's largest and most unique collection of contemporary and innovative sculpture in all its forms. In 2014 we plan to take Lorne Sculpture from exhibition to event status."

-'The impressive and varied selection of talent includes artists whose work occupies or utilises the 3D, achieves high levels of artistic integrity, quality and above all, innovation.'' Julie says.

Festival highlights include:

Sculpturscape:
At Sculpturscape, onlookers will see the intimacy and beauty of sculpture made in front of them in real time. Each weekend during the festival, artist teams will create a sculptural piece over two days that responds directly to the Lorne environment, while audiences are encouraged to engage with the creative process and the artists as they build their creations. A truly unique and special experience.

The Main Street Commission:
The footpaths of Lorne will come alive with the Main Street Commission, a large public art piece designed by Heidi Wood, expat Australian artist now living in Paris (and one of the Biennale's judges). Just point your smart phone at the QR codes on the specially designed artworks all around Lorne to research the artists, sculptures and see the history of the Lorne Sculpture Biennale.

Performance Art:
Some of Australia's most renowned and respected performance artists will present pieces each weekend throughout the festival. Performance artists include Climate Guardian presented by Climarte, Domenico de Clario, Tony Yap, and Ken and Julia Yonetani.

Workshops:
The 2014 program includes sculpture workshops for children and adults, run by local artist Peter Day and an exhibiting Sculptor. Visitors of all ages will have the opportunity create sculpture of their own, and take it home with them.

The event is taking shape with some works already being installed along the foreshore. On Saturday 8th February, Lorne Sculpture President Peter Lamell and Federal Member for Kooyong Josh Frydenberg visited Lorne with sculptor Chaco Kato to inspect her installation on the banks of the Erskine River.

Lorne's position as a regional arts centre in Victoria was cemented in 2013 with the announcement of the $75,000 grant for a permanent sculpture from the Victorian Government. Minister for the Arts, Heidi Victoria MP, visited Lorne to announce the Government's support of the Biennale through the Government's Victorian Sculpture Fund, which will provide a lasting legacy for Lorne and the region.

Australia's most prominent sculptor, Inge King, is Lorne Sculpture Biennale 2014's Arts Patron.

The Lorne Sculpture Biennale will be held along the Lorne foreshore from 8 to 30 March 2014 and is a must-see event to add to your calendar.
