After an unhappy childhood, the beautiful and young Agnes Dempster turns her back on her family an escapes to being a new life in Vermont. It's 1890. There she meets local stonecutter Frank Holt, a man who captures her imagination and opens her eyes to an entirely different world.

They begin an intense relationship, but over time Agnes becomes more dependent on Frank, her love turning into an obsession. When she discovers her beloved is not as perfect as the image she had created of him, the cracks in her already fragile psyche begin to deepen and she views Frank as the betrayer, her obsession becoming dangerous.

Susan Fromberg Schaeffer was born in Brooklyn and educated at the University of Chicago, where she recieved her PhD in 1966. She is the author of 13 books, including the Granite Lady, which was nominated for a National Book Award. She lives in New York.
