The Truth About Breast Implants

The Truth About Breast Implants

As a woman who has had breast implants, I get so many questions about my breast augmentation from friends and people who are curious about what they are, how I got them done and who did them. The truth is that I am so happy with my breasts now, and before I had them done, I was struggling with poor self esteem and poor body image. Now, I'm not advocating the procedure for anyone who is dealing with these issues themselves as a band-aid solution for their body, but as part of my healing process, I came to the decision that my breasts were a huge part of what was making me feel bad about myself. This was a personal decision and one I came to after speaking with my surgeon and after receiving his counsel and also the counsel of my psychologist. I would advise anyone who is considering getting breast implants that they should think about why they want them and then speak to a qualified and recognised surgeon. I initially saw the doctors at The Cosmetic Institute and let's just say, I personally would not recommend them. It is so important to understand the facts and truth about breast implants, so I wanted to share that with you today.

Fact one: You need to be involved in the process and you need to know what's going to happen
You need to know as much as you can about the procedure and to choose the implant that is right for you. The implant you choose and how you get it put into your body isn't only going to affect the shape and size of your breast, but also your cleavage and the overall movement of the breasts.

Fact two: You have to be realistic about your surgery
Because this is exactly what you're getting: Surgery. It's an important decision and when made responsibly, can affect your appearance and confidence. All surgery carries risks, and you need to be informed about them. More importantly, you need to be prepared for the pre- and post-surgery risks and recovery and to ensure that you're cooperating with your surgeon for the best possible recovery results.

Fact: Every woman is different
Everyone is unique and everyone is different. No two women have the same chest wall, muscle volume and projection, and these components combined make a difference for the surgeon. If you're set on a round implant, it might not work for your body, and it comes down to your surgeon and the consultation to work with your body.

Fact: No implant lasts forever
The average life of breast implants is around 10 to 15 years, and while some people are fortunate enough to have their implants last a longer period of time, the reality is that you are going to need an update of your implants at some point in your life. In addition to this, your body is going to change as your hormones change, as you go through pregnancy, weight loss and weight gain and menopause, so the original implant size may eventually be wrong for your body. Your surgeon needs to discuss this with you and to explain that the process may need to be repeated in order to provide you with the best breasts for your body.

I hope that this information has been helpful for you if you are considering breast augmentation, and that you do discuss any concerns that you have with your surgeon prior to undergoing any kind of procedure. Breast augmentation can be a great thing and it's truly changed my life for the better, so provided that you're informed about it, there's no reason why it can't be great for you too.
