Interview with Jean Haner

How can you tell someone's personality, traits and qualities just by looking at their face?

Jean Haner: Chinese face reading is an ancient branch of Chinese medicine. These early scientists developed a way to diagnose someone's health simply by evaluating the patterns in their features. They soon realized they could also see someone's personality, how they'll tend to think, feel and behave, in these same details. The first face readers thousands of years ago were like the original therapists and coaches - they were combinations of scholars and guides who people went to for advice.

Each of us is considered to have been born with a unique design, like a personal blueprint, and your face is seen as a reflection of that blueprint. Your face is kind of like your user's guide - it will reveal your special talents and strengths, as well as your challenges. It can show you the kinds of people you'll do best with in relationship, the kinds of careers that will fulfill you, and it even provides a map of your entire life journey.

Where did you discover how to read a face, just like an open book?

Jean Haner: I married into a Chinese family 30 years ago, and my very traditional mother-in-law knew face reading. I thought it was a terrible thing, to judge someone simply by their appearance! It seemed so negative and critical - she would say not to do business with someone because he had "elephant eyes!" It was only later that I discovered there is a profound and sophisticated system behind the superstitions she had, that helps you understand yourself and others on a deep level.

Is everyone capable of reading other peoples faces to see how they tend to act and behave?

Jean Haner: This is what I do, teach people to read their own face and the faces of everyone in their lives. Anyone can learn to do this and it's really fun and fascinating. I always say I studied for 25 years so I can teach you to do it in a weekend!

What should we look for in our partner's face, to guarantee if he is a keeper?

Jean Haner: I often work with couples who email me their photos for a private face reading consultation, to learn how they can have a successful relationship. Frequently, they're terrified I'm going to tell them they are a bad match and to run for the hills! But in fact, any combination of personalities can work - it's all about understanding and accepting each other.

There are SO many messages in your partner's face that can help you decide whether this is for the long run! For example, if he has a very small mouth with very thin lips, it shows a potential for neediness or clinginess, almost as if you can never give him enough of your time and energy. Or he may complain that you don't consider his needs enough. But when it comes to giving to you, he may not understand how to do that in a way that fulfils you either. If you need a very generous and emotionally nurturing partner, this is probably not going to work out.

Someone with a sharply defined jaw will have strong integrity and a firm belief system, but is very competitive and with a strong need to be active, especially out in nature. If you love to lounge in bed on the weekends or hate to exercise, this will be a problem!

If you have large wide eyes but your partner has deep set, narrowed eyes, you'll love to talk about your relationship and anything else that crosses your mind, but he'll be more reserved and not as open in communications. That can be really hard not to take personally!

If you pluck your eyebrows into a pencil-thin line, this actually will affect your self-confidence and assertiveness and can even attract a romance with a man who'll be too dominating.

How can we learn to love our face?

Jean Haner: Every feature, every wrinkle, every aspect of your face has a special meaning, about who you are and what your life journey will be. If you understand the messages your features have for you, you'll see your true beauty, and no longer cringe when you look in the mirror!

I've watched so many people become thrilled to discover that their sticking-out ears are actually something to be proud of - they mean an independent nature. Or their large nose indicates great potential for power and achievement in life, and an especially fantastic time in their '40s!

I've had people leap to their feet in workshops to shout, "Why isn't this taught in the schools?" I think it's amazing information that can help us love ourselves as well as everyone in our lives.
