Life begins at 40: For women at least

Two out of three men lie about their age while women thrive in their forties

A new study has revealed that Aussie blokes are fearful of turning 40 with twice as many men (69%) lying about their age than women (31%) however, surprisingly one in three men (33%) are pretending to be older than they are in a suggested attempt to 'peacock" and appear younger than their apparent years.

The nationwide -This is 40 Survey', commissioned by Universal Sony Pictures Home Entertainment to mark the Blu-‐ray™, DVD and UltraViolet release of the hit comedy This is 40, also found that twice as many men are likely to experience a midlife crisis than women as they tick over to their fortieth year.

Psychologist Meredith Fuller says: 'Turning 40 raises the anxiety in men that their best years are behind them."

'The survey results very clearly reveal that women in their forties are comfortable with who they are, while men between their thirties and mid-‐forties experience lower happiness levels than at any other time in their lives," Meredith said.

'While men fear their careers are plateauing as the dynamic Gen Y's pop up, women are in greater career demands than ever – older women are the fastest growing small business owners and are feeling that sense of accomplishment and realising they can do it all."

For forty-‐somethings, confidence counts for everything with half (69%) of Aussies not feeling 40 because they don't look it, and 57 per cent feeling the same as they did in their thirties.

Meredith adds: 'The results show that as people get older, their perception of their age and how old they think they feel gets further and further from the truth."

'Men also feel more vulnerable in our visual social age as they try to catch up with self care and learn about self preservation."

'Thanks to society, cosmetic surgery is not the taboo that it used to be. People are also more motivated to take care of themselves -‐ look at Gwyneth Paltrow or Daniel Craig, they're both over 40, fighting fit and looking fantastic."

'Life just begins at 40. Learn not to fear age but see it as gaining even more of what makes you unique."

While only 9 per cent of Aussies bring in the new decade with a big party, the study found that generally men need no excuse to get on the beers with almost half (42%) regularly going out for after work drinks with colleagues.

Even becoming 40 is less confronting for the younger generations with 40 per cent agreeing that life begins at 40 and less than a third of them thinking the age to be old.

The study results perfectly mirror themes from This is 40 starring Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd in which they struggle through balancing careers, children and their relationship as they reach the big 4-‐0.

This is 40 is available on Blu-‐ray™, DVD and UltraViolet from today.
