Interview with Keren Smedley for Who's that woman in the mirror?

Why did you choose to write this book?

Keren Smedley: Well the book is for 45+ woman and older, it can be read by men and women of all ages. I became aware, through my age, my clients and my friends and family that at this age you face new issues and there is very little written about it. There is a lot about parenting and babies and then older, nothing for the in between. The issues we're affected by are different than the generation before us. The book answers a lot of questions I have been asked in my professions.

Woman are scared of ageing, how can they feel better about ageing?

Keren Smedley: It's partly scared of being faced with things they don't know. An example is that no one is interested in menopause- they read a lot about pregnancy, some woman have ten books on pregnancy but negative one on menopause. Women of that age also don't talk about menopause. Young woman talk more in groups about kids, pregnancy and breast feeding, but as women grow they concentrate on working and house chores.

Many woman, especially those with families find themselves in a rut, how can they move from this routine?

Keren Smedley: The book is divided into six sections, one of these sections is about juggling life and feeling good, this section focuses on making time for yourself and telling women to focus on things other than running around kids, at work and as parents.

How can a woman boost her self confidence moving into her 40s and 50s?

Keren Smedley: Focus on what she can do not what she can't do. Think about a confident time, one where she was in control, even if it was at the supermarket and she quickly and neatly packed her shopping bags. Think about a time were you felt self-confident and then image you are there, you tell your head what to think. You cannot make it think nothing, so think positive thoughts.

What marriage/relationship tips do you have for those who have been together for quite a while?

Keren Smedley: This book does have some tips for this but in my second book, called 'Who's that Sleeping in my Bed?' is about sex and successful relationships for baby boomers. It talks about how to spark a relationship. This book talks about that too and tells you to think about who and why you fell in love with that person, instead of treating them like a partner who shares the chores.
