Emeree Interview Leave You Like A Man

Emeree Interview Leave You Like A Man

How would you describe your music?

I'd say it's a mix of retro-soul and pop-tinged 90's RnB. I always have lots of backing vocal layers as well as my signature flute.

Can you tell us about your new album? What was the inspiration?

My new single is a self-produced and engineered track. I played all of the instruments and the writing aspect came together quite quickly. It was inspired by a series of mediocre men I encountered as a 24-year-old experiencing the dating world for the first time, as well as an exploration of sexuality and female empowerment. It was really an excuse for me to just get my frustrations out in a way that made sense to me. I guess this is my way of allowing myself to be bold, loud and take up the space I deserve. The track is very 90's hip-hop inspired with a nod to Amy Winehouse as well. There's a big vocal and instrumental breakdown at the end that features a choir I made out of many layers of myself, as well as me singing in four octaves.

What are your musical influences?

My biggest influences are of course, Amy Winehouse, Marvin Gaye, RAYE, Olivia Dean, Mark Ronson and Cleo Sol.

Do you prefer performing live or recording?

This is such a hard question because while I never get sick of recording and producing (I'm in the studio every single day working either on my own or other artists' projects), there's nothing quite like the rush of performing live. I think live performing gives you more of a kick and an adrenaline rush, but I could keep recording every day for the rest of my life without a complaint at all.

What should we expect from your upcoming tour?

I don't have any tour dates locked in just yet but stay tuned!

What is the story behind the band name?

A lot of people had mentioned in the year leading up to me launching this project that I had a really nice last name. I had never really thought of using the name 'Emery', which is how my last name is actually spelt, but once I tried it out at some shows it seemed catchy enough to remember. I changed the spelling because there were a few other bands with the traditional spelling already.

How did the band come together?

I'm a solo project!

What motivates you most when writing music?

Taking time off and giving myself the space away from constantly working to form ideas organically. I feel like I've developed my songwriting to a point where I can be creative on demand and still get great results, but my best work always comes organically and when an idea really just excites me.

Which music/artists are you currently listening to?

Cleo Sol, RAYE, Olivia Dean and FELIVAND are probably my top at the moment!

What or who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?

I've wanted to be in the music industry for as long as I can remember - I don't think there has ever really been another option in my mind. I do remember announcing to my parents that I was going to be a singer while watching Australian idol at 4 years old though haha.

If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

I spend so much time collaborating so this is very hard to pick one but I'd say Mark Ronson or RAYE would be the dream!

What is the biggest challenge you have faced in the music industry?

I think this industry in itself is a constant challenge but really, it's just a mind game. A producer I was lucky enough to work with this year gave me a great piece of advice and said something along the lines of, "if you're putting in the work and being consistent and your music is good, it is not a matter of if, it is just when". This honestly helped to shift my mindset a lot and put less pressure on each individual release and think big picture and long-term.

What's next, for you?

I've got SO much coming but for now, I'll be finishing the year with some more shows, and prepping for a bunch of new music next year.
