Stephen Blatchford Oral-B Smile Interview

Over a thousand Australians were asked to compare two photos of the same woman - one showing clean, healthy-looking teeth, and the other with yellow, stained teeth. The group were then asked to make assumptions on the age and salary of the woman based on each photograph, with the results showing a healthy, bright smile can make you look up to 14 years younger and add $10,000 to your earning power!

The Smartest Technology for Your Mouth - Oral-B Triumph with Smart Guide
Whether you're a techno wizard or a techno worry, if it's a clean, healthy mouth you're after then look no further than the Oral-B Triumph with SmartGuide.

The Oral-B Triumph with SmartGuide is the most technologically advanced, state-of-the-art power toothbrush on the market. It is the first power toothbrush that comes with a wireless display to help enhance cleaning performance. Otherwise known as the wireless 'SmartGuide', the remote display provides while-you-brush real-time feedback. It's like having a dental professional in your bathroom.

The Oral-B Triumph with SmartGuide was designed to bring together the technology clinically proven to provide outstanding plaque removal and promote gum health, with a visible display to help you improve your brushing habits. With Oral-B Triumph with SmartGuide users have been found to be up to five times more likely to brush for the dental recommended two minutes twice a day than with a regular manual toothbrush.

How the SmartGuide Works
The Oral-B Triumph with SmartGuide brush head, handle and visual display unit work together to provide instant interactive feedback. The brush head and handle are embedded with microchips which communicates with the wireless display unit to help guide you to each quadrant of the mouth and signal when you are brushing too hard.

The Brush Head
The Oral-B Triumph employs proven oscillating-rotating technology, surrounding each tooth to gently remove plaque between each tooth and along the gum line. An independent review concluded that power toothbrushes with oscillating-rotating technology were shown to be consistently better at removing plaque than manual tooth brushing.

With 40,000 in-and-out pulsations per minute plaque is gently loosened. In addition, 8,800 back and forth oscillations per minute sweep plaque away.

The SmartGuide encourages you to brush thoroughly, gently and for the dental-recommended two minutes. It's no wonder Oral-B is the brand more dentists use themselves worldwide.

The Oral-B Triumph with SmartGuide is available for $199.99RRP. For stockists phone 1800 148 022 or go to www.oralb.com.au

Interview with Stephen Blatchford

Question: Are you surprised that healthy-looking teeth can make you look up to 14 years younger and add $10,000 to your earning power over yellow, stained teeth?

Stephen Blatchford: No, not at all. As we age, our teeth show signs of wear, discolouring and ageing. Your smile tells the world about you and, to me, healthy teeth and a healthy smile indicate vitality, youth, happiness and general wellbeing.

Question: When you first look at someone, are their teeth the first thing you notice?

Stephen Blatchford: A person's smile is the first thing I notice. A person who is confident with their smile seems happy within themselves enough to show off their teeth.

Question: What are some simple tips to look after our teeth?

Stephen Blatchford: Brush for two minutes, twice a day and remember to floss! A common mistake is when people think they have a great dental routine, but are only brushing for 30 seconds. It's really important to ensure you brush thoroughly, gently and for two minutes. Using a power toothbrush such as the Oral-B Triumph with SmartGuide, which comes with a wireless display that provides feedback while you brush, will help improve brushing habits.

To reduce bacteria and bad breath, use a mouth rinse such as the Oral-B Tooth and Gum Care Rinse. Other tips include, eating well and avoiding (or limiting) foods and drinks that can cause tooth decay, erosion and discolouring. Also make sure you drink plenty of water.

Question: What food and drink should we avoid to ensure we have a healthy looking smile?

Stephen Blatchford: Ensure that foods and drinks that cause decay, erosion and discolouration (such as fruit juice, wine, carbonated sports drinks, citrus fruits, tea, coffee, red wine, blackberries, blueberries and beets) are consumed in moderation. Limiting or avoiding these foods and drinks will assist in ensuring that a healthy looking smile is maintained.

Question: If we find that our teeth are a bit yellow, what should we do?

Stephen Blatchford: If you notice your teeth are yellow, this could be due to plaque or stain build-up. A proper brushing technique will remove this build-up. Using the Triumph toothbrush with a Pro-Bright brush head is recommended as it has a special polishing cup, designed to remove surface stains. For further whitening, a thorough clean by a dentist may be required. Your dentist can also recommend tooth whitening procedures.

Question: What attributes healthy-looking teeth?

Stephen Blatchford: To me, a healthy smile looks bright and white, with well shaped teeth that are framed by healthy gums.

Question: Do you ever get upset at a patient that seems like they aren't taking care of their teeth?

Stephen Blatchford: My job is not to judge my patients but to educate them on how they can best look after their teeth. If a patient isn't taking care of their teeth, I make sure that they are aware of the risks involved including tooth decay and gum disease. Good oral hygiene is an important part of your overall health and this is why brushing twice a day, along with using a mouth rinse and floss should be made a priority to control the build-up of plaque.

Question: Why did you originally become a dentist?

Stephen Blatchford: Dentistry allows me to work with my hands and be creative whilst helping people. It allows me to be my own boss and I enjoy the social aspect of seeing a number of patients throughout the day.
